CrownDrive Windsor Carriages grew from a quiet local idea — to keep the tradition of horse-drawn travel visible and alive within the town that knows royalty, pageantry, and calm riverside life. Our small group of coachwomen, drivers, and handlers work year-round to offer short loops, private bookings, and event transfers using carriages restored and maintained with great care.
Each carriage has its own story. Some were found in farm barns and repaired piece by piece. Others were once used for wedding processions and now see quieter service for visitors wishing to travel through Windsor at an unhurried pace. The sound of hooves on cobblestone remains one of the simplest ways to step away from fast roads and engines, even if only for an hour.
Our team includes experienced coach drivers and stable hands who spend as much time with the horses as they do with guests. Training is continuous and focuses on safety, communication, and understanding animal behavior. Horses are selected not for speed but for steadiness and comfort. Every route is tested for gradients, surfaces, and stopping spaces to ensure a calm, even experience.
Visitors often comment on how much detail goes into the preparation — harness checks, clean upholstery, clear briefings, and even a map on the coach side showing approximate route options. We aim to help guests see Windsor from a slightly different angle, where castle towers rise behind trees, and river light changes quietly through the day.
Most rides follow gentle loops near Peascod Street and the riverside paths. In fair weather, we include short pauses for photos near the castle approach or by the Long Walk. For small celebrations or photography sessions, extended hires are available with timing flexibility within agreed windows.
No two outings feel the same. The rhythm of the horses, the distance of the bells, or even the tone of afternoon light can change how each guest experiences the ride. CrownDrive places strong emphasis on animal welfare and road awareness. All carriages meet current British safety and road-use guidance for slow-moving vehicles. The horses are cared for on nearby pastures, with regular rest periods and balanced work schedules. We follow advice from equine health professionals and hold public liability cover as required by UK law.
Environmentally, we believe tradition can align with care for the surroundings. Horse-drawn movement requires no fuel, only patience and skill. When the carriages are cleaned or painted, all materials used are eco-rated and water-based.
Carriage movement has long been part of Windsor’s identity. The castle gates, riverside roads, and market lanes all hold traces of transport from centuries ago. CrownDrive’s routes are designed to trace small fragments of that heritage. By doing so, we help sustain the knowledge of how these horses once carried goods, letters, and families through the same streets.
